 “A True Irish Soccer Great”

Johnny Giles signed Ireland Replica Jersey and

signed Leeds United Replica Jersey

Widely recognised as having one of the finest minds for the game and being one of the best passers of the ball of his generation, Giles was signed by Leeds in 1963 for £33,000 from Manchester United, having just won the FA Cup with Matt Busby’s side. He made almost 400 league appearances for Leeds, including being one of a small band of Irish footballers to have ever played in a European Cup final.

Johnny made his debut for Ireland in 1959 at the age of 19, against Sweden, which the Irish team won 3-2. He went on to become a stalwart of all of the Irish qualification campaigns from 1959 until 1979 during which time he also managed the team from 1973 to 1980. Giles was capped 59 times by the Republic of Ireland and he is credited for bringing a new sense of professionalism and belief to the international soccer team. His inspiration brought Ireland to the brink of qualification for the 1978 World Cup Finals.

When asked once; was football good for him? His reply was "...it's been great to me." Ireland has had few better servants of the game.
