This 2002 Volvo C70 Convertible car bonnet is a unique piece of art created for Bangers and Cash, the UK’s first art roadshow banger rally from Sheffield to Monte Carlo which took place on 21st – 25th September 2018. This car was driven by Team Better Late than Never from sponsors Evolution Power Tools.

Keen to keep ahead of rival Evolution Power Tools teams Rage and Fury, unfortunately for team captain Matt, he fell asleep and left the navigating to his team mates who proceeded to spend the next hour driving round in a big circle and waking up only 20km further down the road. He wasn’t impressed…!

Jo Peel is an artist whose work uplifts. She proposes an urban landscape to evoke the same feelings as the pastoral, elevating the pictorial representation of tumble-down factories and abandoned shops to the stature of romantic paintings of rolling hills and moors. By drawing, Peel offers her view that it is these cityscapes that are as important to the English topographic tradition as the natural beauty of the Peak District that buttresses her home city of Sheffield. These markers of an industrial past, or a modernist intent, become alive, loved and represented again. This is not finding beauty in the dust; this is offering a new language to understand what is beautiful.

The City landscape is forever changing, new buildings are created and old ones renovated or flattened. Trees intertwine brick buildings and chimneys from the industrial past rise into the skyline alongside the cranes that create new futures. All this change, but to the residents of Sheffield, there is no place like home.
